Umi Weekend!

Greetings my fellow observers!

So, while we all await to see the fate of our bully brother from another mother in the south, think about ways to kick your electoral and empire blues this weekend.
Here's some ways where we can keep it communal....

Feed The Farmers!

Come out and be filled with the ecstatic inspiration of local poets and musicians coming together to support our most cherished and essential trade: FARMING!

With food and fuel prices rising local small organic farmers are suffering greatly. Consumers continue to be unable or unwilling to pay a fair price for their food. Agri-corp's monopolization and industrialization of our food supply enslaves entire nations as industrial food factories while our consumerist society ignorantly depreciates the food we buy and eat. Local organic farmers attempt to re-connect the human experience with the soul of the earth by teaching them to appreciate and understand their food, from the soil to the seeds to the air and water that all life drinks and breathes.

As the organics movement continues to grow we must ensure that our local small organic farmers can survive in increasingly difficult times. This is what brings us closer to food sovereignty and sustainability. All the money raised at Feed The Farmers will go towards three unique causes.

FEATURING!

Laura Beach+Charlie Bellemare with Gianna Lauren

Laura Beach, based in Montreal, has been a song smith for as long as anyone can remember. She has been gradually revealing her full talent over the last 2 years, busking her familiar sounds into the streets wherever they may fall. She reunited with Charlie Bellemare through happy coincidence this past summer and since then, the two have been twisting together faint nostalgic melodies in Montreal, Ottawa and anywhere in between.

Gianna Lauren is a singer-songwriter based in Ottawa playing soft folk-rock music with her brother Dan and friend Matt. "Fist in a Heart" is the debut album from the trio, featuring 8 atmospheric songs layered with instrumentation and warm vocal heights. The album was recorded over the course of a year at The Gallery Studio in Ottawa with Arturo Brisindi. The album is currently available at Sounds Unlikely, Compact Music in the Glebe and through Gianna.

LECTURE - Project Accompaniment and Solidarity in Colombia (PASC)

FILM SCREENING AND PRESENTATION

What are the effects of state terrorism in Colombia? How can we understand the political context of Colombia outside of the mainstream media in North America? Who are the armed actors, and what threat do they represent for the civilian populations? What is Canada's role in doing business in Colombia, by supporting a paramilitary and military regime and adding to the associated social and environmental consequences?

Everyone is welcome to this free event. It will be followed by a discussion in English, French and Spanish.

David Parker is an independent journalist and a member of the Project Accompaniment and Solidarity Colombia (PASC), a Montreal-based collective that is building a network of direct solidarity with peasant communities in civil resistance in Colombia. Our demands are for the Right to Land, Life and Self-Determination. David was a PASC accompanier in Colombia in 2007. He is now a community radio news coordinator in Halifax.
