Autumn has arrived! The sun is sinking below the horizon earlier and earlier each day. The leaves have begun to set branches ablaze in a wash of orange, red and gold. As another season arrives, we can take a moment to reflect on the changes that have happened in our own lives, in our community, and at a corner café in Somerset West. The workers at Umi Café would like to embrace this new season in a celebration of our collective accomplishments at the third Umi Café Community Gathering.

Since the winter of 2009, the workers and supporters of Umi Café joined together in support of the continued existence of our neighbourhood café. The stormy spring of 2009 has now passed and through our collective efforts we have accomplished a feat that at times seemed impossible; to continue to provide a unique and open space for artistic expression, sharing and friendship, while also achieving our goal of creating a sustainable ethical business that is owned and operated by those who work there.

With the support of our patient and inspiring community, and through the tireless efforts of the Umi workers, we have made some enormous strides toward achieving our goals. We are now formally incorporated as Soñando Sofia Co-operative Inc and are navigating a clear path toward making our café a successful fixture in the Somerset West community.

We, the workers of Umi Café and members of Soñando Sofia, would like to take this opportunity to invite you to a special community gathering. In the spirit of openness and transparency, we wish to share with you an update about the café and the co-operative, our financial results and plans for the future. As a community café, we hope you will join us on this special night in order to share with us your opinions, perspectives, ideas and hopes for Umi Café. Those who wish to become more involved in the ongoing development of the co-operative and the café will have the opportunity to learn about investing in Umi Café by becoming a shareholder of Soñando Sofia Co-operative Inc.
