"Ingredients" Poetry Workshops

Poetry Workshops facilitated by each member of Canada's National Slam Champions "The Recipe"

2009 Canadian Festival of Spoken Word Winners "The Recipe" will be conducting four-part workshops every Wednesday in January, starting January 6th.
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Mark it down on your calendars; workshops will be happening on the following days:

Wednesday January 6th

Wednesday January 13th

Wednesday January 20th

Wednesday January 27th

All workshops will be happening at Umi Cafe from 7:00- 8:30

The Workshops will deal with all of the most important aspects of spoken word poetry, and will be presented in a way that engages its participants on a variety of levels.

Each member of the group will conduct a 30-minute workshop on the aspect of slam that they know best.

In part one of the workshop, Poetic Speed (Komi Olafimihan) will give you a thorough run-down of the history of slam poetry as an art form, and as an entertainment vehicle. In his workshop, Komi will talk about the various styles that are most prevalent in spoken word communities across North America.

In part two of the workshop, Brandon Wint will help participants explore different mechanisms for unleashing their inner-most reflections and feelings. Brandon's style incorporates seminar-style, communal-based learning techniques. This part of the workshop will get participants engaged with the connection between emotion and creation, and encourage writers to challenge their personal shadows, and get over their inhibitions.

In the third part of the workshop, Open Secret will get you familiar with the technical aspects of writing. By instructing writers on aspects of language such as grammar, syntax, punctuation, and word-choice, Open Secret teach you how to perfect your expressions and get them ready to be delivered on stage.

Lastly, dynamic and engaging performer Ian Keteku will take you through thirty minutes of performance training. This section will give you all the tools you'll need in order to take your finished piece of writing and turn it into a confidently-delivered piece of performance art.

At the end of the workshop, there will be a period for general questions.

the cost for the workshop is $10, but you are encouraged to attend even if you can't afford the full price.

please e-mail us at recipepoets@gmail.com if you have any questions or concerns.
